Why Haas Is Taking a Risk on Rookie Rafael Camara for 2027

Haas has made a bold move for the 2027 Formula 1 season by signing Brazilian rising star Rafael Camara, choosing to invest in youth and potential as the team prepares for a new chapter.
The 21-year-old will replace Esteban Ocon after impressing the team with his speed, adaptability and performances in the junior racing categories.
A Rising Star from Formula 2
Camara has enjoyed a remarkable rise through the motorsport ranks. After winning the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship and the 2025 Formula 3 title, he has continued his progress in Formula 2, where he currently leads the championship standings.
His performances have attracted attention from Haas and Ferrari, with the Brazilian already part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2022.
Why Haas Chose Camara
Haas evaluated several candidates for its vacant 2027 seat, including Leonardo Fornaroli, Ryo Hirakawa and Jack Doohan. However, Camara stood out during testing at Portimao, Portugal, where he demonstrated impressive pace and an ability to adapt quickly to an unfamiliar F1 car.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu was particularly impressed by more than just the rookie's raw speed, highlighting his approach and ability to get the best out of himself during testing.
The decision reflects Haas' confidence in developing young talent, following the progress of Oliver Bearman, who has also advanced through the Ferrari junior programme.
A Risk Worth Taking?
Promoting a rookie to Formula 1 comes with challenges. Camara has yet to experience a Grand Prix weekend in current F1 machinery, and stepping up from Formula 2 will require him to adapt to the sport's higher demands.
However, Haas believes his junior-category achievements and testing performance offer encouraging signs for the future.
Camara is set to become the second Brazilian on the 2027 F1 grid, joining Gabriel Bortoleto. His arrival also signals Haas' continued commitment to building a competitive team around emerging talent.
With the 2027 season approaching, all eyes will be on whether Camara can translate his junior success into results at the highest level of motorsport.
